At long last the weather relented and at long last too Sutton managed to field two teams in the upper age group of the Lincolnshire Friendly Leagues. This represented a good effort in itself with the half term holiday interfering and the 70 mile journey to Louth being the furthest we have to travel. Thankfully the juniors rewarded their parents for making the trip with an excellent morning's hockey. Both teams excelled after an opening match which pitted the blue and green teams against each other. The blues were far too respectful of their more-experienced clubmates, allowing the greens to romp to a 5-0 victory.

Thereafter the Blues got stuck in well and emerged with a good set of results. They managed a 0-0 draw with Spalding, a 1-1 draw with Leadenham and a 1-0 victory over Horncastle. Harry Synnott got both their goals, Leah Goodley chased all over the pitch, David Shire showed the benefits of his training with the seniors and Lewis Shooter ran himself to a standstill. Although they lost to Bourne 1-0, this was a fine effort as Bourne had steamrollered their previous three opponents.

The goals flowed freely for the Green team and as a result they will be promoted back into the elite group. The main beneficiary was Jack Smith, whose rapid improvement now sees him attacking with pace and purpose and an eye for the poacher's half-chance. Young James Cudlipp was a late call up in goal, but had his best day in a Sutton shirt, showing the confidence to come out and challenge the forwards. The Greens lost only once, 1-0 to the all-conquering Bourne team, but actually had more chances to score than their opposition, with the Bourne keeper making a couple of outstanding saves.

The other matches were all fairly one-sided: 3-0 v Spalding, 4-1 v Leadenham and a six goal victory over Horncastle. Jack Smith ended the day with nine goals, Will White had five, Sam Gray two and Laura Temple and Jeorgia Carr one each.

A good day all round, but still plenty to work on to be ready for next month's challenges.
