Long Sutton ladies finally met with Alford today after weather delayed our original meet earlier in the season. With it being half term, skiing and various other holiday destinations left us slightly depleted in numbers, but not in enthusiasm. The first half initially saw Sutton push up on the right, with strong play from Lucy Smith and Emma Grovesnor (POM), through to Georgina Synott playing out wide. As Alford clamped down on our attack, Charlie Leuty and Rhian Goodge supported, repeatedly taking the ball in and around Alfords D. Despite being awarded several long corners, Sutton could not capitalize on the opportunities and it was Alford that found the break, turning the tables to bring play to Suttons goal. They managed to win a short corner and despite the efforts of our defence they were able to convert. Despite being 1-0 down, Sutton kept their heads high and battled on. Grosvenor worked consistently in the middle, linking successfully with Heather Ludlam on the left of the pitch. Ludlam made some great runs to find Hannah baker who managed to win a short corner for Sutton. An opportunity Sutton capitalized on as Emile Raichelyte deflected into the right hand side of Alfords goal. The whistle blew for a half time score of 1-1. As the temperature dropped Suttons determination for the win grew. Sutton took some much welcomed advice from managers Lisa Baker, James Baker and Steffan Fox. With new instructions, Sutton filled the gaps in the middle of the pitch, allowing more possession for the green army ladies. The speed of Ludlam and Baker (H) broke through Alfords defence and as they scrambled for a goal, short corners were won but frustratingly, not converted. As the clock ticked tension on both teams started to build and as Sutton lost Goodge to injury they were determined to find that elusive winning goal. With the added support of Leuty and Baker (L) on the pitch, Sutton never gave up and finally their efforts were rewarded. Another team scramble in the D led to three more shots on target until eventually Lynne Braginton got a stick to the ball and saw it trickle under the keepers feet. A great team effort resulting in a much needed 2-1 win for Suttons Ladies.
