After a walkover win in the first game of the league season, Long Sutton Ladies 2's travelled to pastures new, for the majority of the team, this week to take on St Ives Ladies 4's. In the first few minutes, St Ives looked like a well drilled outfit and it seemed that Sutton were in for a stern test, however they soon settled, putting the journey behind them. Inspired by the terrier of the team, Jasmine Smith, who seemed to be running on over-drive from the off, they began to take the game to St Ives, who began to find the game being played in their half. Sutton's other new youngster, Amelia Norey was making intelligent runs with and without the ball to open up the space for Sutton to play. The centre of the park was being controlled by Emma Grosvenor and Gemma Parr who cut out any attacks that St Ives could muster with Becky Hales and Claire Smith only needing to mop up the odd ball that did make it's way through. Wallis a virtual spectactor at the top of the D. With the backs of Julie Skate and Lucy Smith pushing forward, the only slight criticism of Sutton's great play was that they had not done enough to work the St Ives keeper who was mopping up anything in the D with ease. However, with half time looming, a great ball from Sarah Skate (a very late, but welcome inclusion into the team) found it's way to Emma Grosvenor who made no mistake. 1-0 to Sutton. Then soon after, it was two, another fine ball into the D, by Parr, this time was finished with aplomb by Wendy Canham.

Half-time and 2-0 Sutton!

The second half continued in the same vein with Sutton being camped in the St Ives half. Even when Parr had to take 5 following an injury, Sutton were able to manage the situation. Esme Whitelam was having a great game on the left, ever willing to run up and down, and Sutton were being sensible in attack, looking to win a short corner, if they could not get a shot away. From one such short, Becky Hales thought that she was going to join her goal-scoring household, but the umpire deemed that the ball had not come out of the D, before her perfectly placed shot had found the bottom corner with precision. No matter, Sutton, whilst tiring in the late September heat, were able to see out the rest of the game, with fair ease, having not even conceded a short corner, let alone a goal in the whole 70 mins. A great display from this emerging team. Player of the match was awarded to Jasmine Smith, definitely the terrier of the team!

Next week the ladies are at home to Cambs South 6ths. We go again!
