Long Sutton Ladies 2's V Cambs South 6th 2nd October 2021

Although at home this week, on the beautiful carpet of Long Sutton, the ladies 2's faced another unknown quantity in Cambs Ladies 6ths. Buoyed by last week's win, Sutton started brightly but whilst Cambs South were short in numbers, it was clear that they were an outfit that knew what they were doing. Sutton pushed forward with clever runs made by the two youngsters of the team, Florence Perowne and Amelia Norey, andWendy Canham was unfortunate not to open the scoring on a couple of occasions with the final touch just eluding the goal. With Sutton pushed forward, Cambs South were often quick on the break and the defence of Julie Skate, Claire Sisson and Lucy Smith had to have their wits about them to thwart the attacks. Keeper, Lorraine Wallis, a virtual spectator last week being called into action on more than one occasion. Becky Hales pushed hard and with Gemma Parr making clever passes and Lottie Dack putting in a shift, like last week, the opposition were forced onto the back foot. However with the half coming to an end, Cambs South won 3 short corners in a row, but these were defended resolutely and the half-ended goalless.

The half-time team talk reminded Sutton to move the ball around as it would be difficult for Cambs South to continue to cover the whole pitch for a further 35 minutes. Sutton again started brightly with Sarah Skate and Georgina Synnott linking well, but again Sutton were unable to convert their chances, despite intelligently winning short corners when nothing else was on. Unfortunately Sutton suffered a blow when what looked to be an innocuous coming together saw Becky Hales leave the field (later confirmed, has having broken her wrist) and this led to a re-shuffle, with Parr being forced back. The game became very open with chances both ends and it was going to take one moment of brilliance or a mistake that led to one of the teams opening the scoring. Neither happened and whilst it may seem like two points lost, Sutton remain unbeaten, with them yet to concede a goal. This team is making great progress and they look forward to next weeks game, albeit not the early start!

Player of the match was awarded to Lottie Dack for her willingness to run and for never giving up.
