Long Sutton Ladies faced Kettering for the second time this season, having drawn the away game 0-0. That had felt like a victory at the time, but the mantra for the second half of the season is to try and improve on the results from the first half of the season and Sutton did not disappoint. Kettering travelled to Sutton, for an afternoon start, realising that the 10:00am away slot had been a little unfair! Sutton pegged them back from the off, with excellent running from the forward line of Florence Perowne, Wendy Canham and Amelia Norey and intelligent passing from Penny Perowne, Jasmine Smith and Immi Cooper in midfield, ensuring that the young Kettering keeper had plenty to think about whist being filmed.

Kettering did break through at one stage and with the ball failing to reach the Sutton D, keeper Wallis felt the need to come out and remind everyone why she doesn't play with her stick. A few minutes later another shaky moment from her, almost led to Kettering getting something from their long away trip. However, Sutton were keen to take the game to Kettering and began passing the ball around with confidence. They were soon to be rewarded for their efforts and after good build up play Florence Perowne pounced on a loose ball in the D to slam the ball past the helpless keeper. 1-0 Sutton. Not to be outdone 1-0 soon became 2-0 when a ball fired into the D from Gemma Parr, found Wendy Canham in a great position on the base line, and she coolly played the ball to Penny Perowne to show that anything her daughter could do, she could do too. The game was now being played predominantly in the Kettering half, however anything that did come through was ably dealt with by Gemma Parr, Lucy Smith, playing in an unaccustomed central defensive role, and Georgina Synnott, seamlessly slotting in at right back. Julie Skate at left back also her usual imperious self. With the benefit of a sub this week, Sarah Skate was welcomed back into the side ensuring that the side was kept fresh. The lead was stretched further before half-time with a great ball from defence played out to Perowne senior to play the ball into the D for Immi Cooper to finish with aplomb.

With the wind against, the second half was always going to be tougher for Sutton but they continued to show how far they have come this season with some excellent hockey being played. Jasmine Smith was linking well with Amelia Norey and a great cross into the D found Florence who fired a great first time shot that the young Kettering keeper did well to save. Wendy Canham, ran tirelessly to put the Kettering defence under pressure all game, forcing them to make mistakes. Kettering did have a short spell of pressure of their own with a spell of 3 short corners on the bounce but these were defended excellently by the Sutton defensive unit. (The second meanest defence in the league). The only real surprise was that Sutton were not able to add to their first half goal-tally despite everyone's best efforts. 3 goals in a game is definitely something to be extremely proud of though.

Player of the match was a difficult one this week, and could have gone to anyone but especially any of Immi Cooper, Jasmine Smith, Amelia Norey or Penny Perowne but eventual winner was Florence Perowne for her tremendous all round performance. Wally of the week was not so difficult and was correctly awarded to Captain and GK, Wallis. Next week, away against Newmarket who have had some great results when at home.
