Long Sutton Ladies were on the road again this week to pastures new, not knowing what to expect, with Newmarket having failed to travel to Sutton earlier in the season.

With the strong wind behind them, Sutton started strong and took the game to Newmarket, putting them under pressure from the off. Newmarket's defence was strong, however, with experienced players thwarting Sutton's youngsters. Sutton were playing great hockey with the ball being moved well between the midfield of Penny Perowne, Jasmine Smith and Lucy Smith, playing slightly out of position this week, and the forward line of Florence Perowne, Wendy Canham and Amelia Norey. Wendy Canham finding some great positions on the base line, but just unable to find that final touch to put the ball into the back of the net. Florence Perowne, confident, following her player of the match performance last week went close after some great build up play, unfortunately just placing the ball wide of the left hand post. Amelia Norey, also growing in confidence, as the season goes on, was making some intelligent runs and calls to keep Newmarket penned into their half. Jasmine Smith continues to belie her years, playing in centre mid always available to retain possession. Newmarket were unable to put much pressure on the Sutton defence, but did force a few breaks when Sutton turned over the ball, however the miserly defence of Julie Skate, Claire Sisson and the ever- versatile George Synnott were in no mood to give them anything. Sutton did take the lead that their play deserved when some great build up play saw Gemma Parr pick the ball up just outside the attacking D and following a dinking run, she expertly placed the ball into the right- hand corner of the goal, giving the young keeper no chance. With the benefit of a squad of 12 Sutton were able to rotate with Sarah Skate on and off the pitch to ensure that Sutton were able to see out the half with ease.

After a much longer half- time break than usual Sutton found the going tough in the second half with the wind against them and playing up hill. The back line were having to work harder than in the first half. They were happy to step up though and broke down Newmarket's attacks outside the D, with Wallis not being called into action. They did have to defend a couple of short corners, but did so with ease. Sutton managed the game out showing how much they have grown since the start of the season. All in all a great performance.

Player of the match was a tough one this week, Lucy Smith going close, having had an exceptional game in a new position, but was taken by Penny Perowne, for her great positioning, always being available to enable great links between the defence and attack. Next week with no league game, Sutton have a friendly local derby with Wisbech.
