With the Long Sutton pitch gleaming on a sunny spring morning, the ladies 2s lined up with a strong team of 13, welcoming back Gemma Parr and Amelia Norey, fresh from her first team debut least weekend. Sutton superstar Jasmine Smith padded up to defend the Sutton goal this week whilst skipper Lorraine was on loan to the ladies 1s. However, she still managed to make time to give an inspiring team talk and cheer her team on from the sideline for the first half.

March had first pushback which was quickly overturned by the Sutton midfield. A ball was played through to Whitelam on the right wing and she went on a mazy dash to the D, passing the ball across to Wendy Canham who just sent it a little wide of the posts. A strong start from Sutton. March were quick to respond, a big hit from a 16 sent the ball straight through to their forwards who were fast on the break, putting the defence of Julie Skate, Claire Sisson and Lucy Smith on the run, ably assisted by Parr. Any balls that did make it through the defence were easily cleared away by young Jasmine Smith with confidence. Skipper Wallis was getting very animated on the sideline!

Play was even throughout the first half, with both teams managing to make the break. Parr sending a cracker of a ball through to Amelia Norey, who was just unable to get her stick to it. Emma Grosvenor assisting Parr, sending strong balls through to the forwards of Norey and Florence Perowne, who were linking up nicely to play the ball through the March defence. With Sutton having 2 subs, the fresh legs of Georgina Synnott and Aimee Betts came on to try to cause upset to top of the table March. Half time and it was still 0-0.

Sutton started strong in the second half, playing the ball through. Remembering Wallis' favourite quote ‘the ball never tires'. But March came back strong, breaking in groups of 3 or 4 players. Sarah Skate working hard alongside Grosvenor and Parr to snuff out any balls before they reached the defence. However, with Suttons subbing going a little Pete Tong, seeing two of their key defenders subbed off at the same time and the team reshuffle seeing players in new positions, March was able to break and enter the D hammering the ball into the goal. Within 5 minutes, the same happened again. Sutton was 2-0 down. Undefeated, they kept their heads up, it wasn't long before they won a short. Flops injected a fast ball across the D to Parr, who hit a fantastic shot, unfortunately sending it just wide of the goal.

The final whistle blew at 2-0 with Jasmine Smith earning a well deserved POTM. The game showed true team spirit and also how much this team has developed and grown, as individuals and as a team, since the start of the season. We go again next week.
