High flying Bury were welcomed to the Peele Astro to be met by 11 players playing on the 11th day of Christmas as Sutton put in their best performance of 2019 so far! The game started with a high tempo and to a quality which would not have been out of place in higher divisions; defensively Whitmore, Fox, Baguley, Burton and SAS Synott were in unison and were aided well by Oldfield after Burton was taken out under ‘friendly' fire; Batten, Baker, Hagen, Markille, Synott jnr and Ellis buzzed around in midfield and Canham ran tirelessly up front. The only thing the game lacked for most of the first half was a goal and whilst it was the team from Suffolk who scored first this did not deter the home side and they equalised with a well worked goal from Jacob Synott after excellent work from Danny Batten. The scores finished level at half time. Captain Fox gave his usual Napoleonic speech at half time backed up with Ellis's Socratic musings and the side restarted with spirits raised on the back of the outstanding first half performance. The game carried on at a great pace and to an outstanding standard with chances both ends and it was the team from the home of Greene King that took the lead again from a well hit short corner; the Green Kings were not to be defeated today though and after a period of pressure Josh Baker scored from the edge of the D with a shot hit so hard that the keeper only saw it on the slow motion replay! The game continued and despite a series of short corners at the end of the match Sutton saw out the result and shared the points with the team that finished the day top of the division. The young side were a delight to watch, they worked hard for each other, they retained their spirit and they thoroughly entertained their fan base. A great performance and a fantastic launch pad for the run of games through to the end of the season.
