As often happens when the start of the cricket season overlaps with the end of the hockey season teams can be a little short of personnel and Saturday was no different for Long Sutton who entertained a 14 man Kettering squad with the bare 11 players. Sutton started steadily, despite missing the Synott boys through injury and Dan Oldfield through a number of lovely cover drives, in a game that was end to end despite the Indian summer heat on the Fenland Riviera! The young lads worked hard to make up for the loss of Sam Markillie from last season and whilst they did concede were only 3-1 down at half time to the well drilled Kettering side. The half time team talk was constructive and in the second half the team played with a little more intelligence and purpose and to use that overused consolation speech ‘drew the second half'; sadly points are not given for halves won! Ultimately it was always going to be a big ask for 11 players to get anything from a game against 14 players in warm conditions, but the spirit shown and work rate given by all of the players on the pitch was a major positive and will stand the team in good stead as the season goes on and players return.
