Sutton left idyllic Lincolnshire looking to continue their good start to the season with a squad of 12 and a bag of DIY after match refreshments! When the fixtures came out no one could have predicted that the squad would have to encounter not only a fuel shortage but the start of the St Neots Monsoon season, but get there they did even Adam Taylor……………………………………just. Sutton started well against a well drilled Saints team with Shooter making an assured start to his first game of the season and Ben Hales continuing his excellent start to the season alongside the defensive partnership of Baguley and Clarke with their 85 years of experience between them. Sisson, as soon as everyone found a language he did understand, continued to improve in goal and gradually Sutton began to take control with Fox holding midfield ably supported by the Fraternity of Whites, who performed well in front of their Patriarch! Ed White took house bragging rights by finishing a well worked move well after good work from Hales and Watt, who must have impressed the watching crowd with his hard work. 0-1 Sutton pushed on with Olly and Adam Taylor working well as well as Will White always offering an option – however a mix of good saves from the home keeper and less than clinical finishing resulted in no further goals from open play. Though Sutton did double their lead before half time when Canham's shot was saved only for Fox to react smartly and put away the rebound. 0-2 The 2nd half started as the rain persisted and Sutton continued to pressure the home team, POTM Fox continued to dominate and Sutton got their third when he created a chance for Canham who scored. 0-3 He then finished off the scoring from another short when Canham returned the compliment to him and he finished well. 0-4 Sutton could have scored more, indeed Fox had clearly decided he did not want a hat trick as his second full length dive in 2 weeks result in a fine after teas and nothing else – Saints did take the game to Sutton in patches but the well marshalled defence was not to be breached and even when Sisson was beaten Fox headed off the line only for the game to be taken back for the ball being hit just above the backboard. Whilst the players managed to keep the umpires busy right until the end of the game there were no more goals and both sides should be praised for playing well in such abysmal conditions, as should the umpires be praised for operating in a downpour! A good win and we go again next week – beware the Log Burner Olly Taylor!
