MATCH REPORT
LSHC Mens' Second v Bourne Deeping 4ths
Played Away on 15th January 2022In a week where watching the weather forecast overtook waiting for COVID test results of players as a Hockey Captains most regular pastime, it was good that the match away at Bourne Deeping went ahead. Sutton travelled without Si Clarke and Will White, so Jack Smith and Gary Hales stepped up to complete the 12 man squad. This was the first game back after the Xmas break and the rustiness was reflected in the first 10 minutes play, however Sutton were soon settled down by Ed Whites finish to open the scoring for 2022. This gelled Sutton to play some quality hockey; Taylor and Baguley dominated the defence ably assisted by Jack Smith. Stef Fox as usual ran operations in midfield alongside his multi-lingual assistant Ed Blanco; these two recycled ball with Frazer Watt and Dan Batten and the ever willing Ben Hales and Tyler Hagan worked hard to create chances . Canham and Hales Senior always looking for chances in and around the D. Ed White gave a masterclass in quality distribution as Bourne gave him the one thing he craves most – time on the ball. Another 2 goals scored, 2 goals assisted performance from him. Even so, this was not the MOTM performance; this went to Hagan who scored 2 great goals and played Hales in for his goal in a great example of unselfish play. The final goal of the half came from Canham striking from a short for Fox to add to his tally with a smart finish. It would be wrong to pick out individuals in the team though as this was a great team performance – from the forwards back to Sisson in the goal who gave the two watching senior ladies team goalkeepers a demonstration in how to keep goal. Half time was the usual tweaking of the edges and the second half started on a foggy morning. Sutton seemed to take their foot of the gas a little and whilst had chance after chance they only managed to add one goal in a game played in very fair good spirits. White striking on his reverse to take his tally to two with a smart finish. The game meandered towards a good natured end and all that remained was to see if Sisson could retain his clean sheet and he almost did……………………………………until he didn't! A short was conceded with 2 minutes to go and whilst clearance attempts were made, eventually it dropped to Bates who got that consolation goal for the Bourne side. A good win for Sutton in a game played in a good atmosphere, three more points as the side in green looked to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
