A chilly Saturday afternoon welcomed Sutton back to play their first home game of 2022, where St Neots were the visitors. Sutton were strengthened by the return of both Will White and Si Clarke to the fold and were also joined by Josh Smith who was once again stepping up from the 3rds. Sutton started with a lot of possession but were met by a well organised resolute Saints team who whilst they harboured very few attacking intentions did have a survival plan and it began to work very well. 5 goalless minutes became 10 goalless minutes and then 15 – some good defensive work was aided by some slightly off finishing as it remained scoreless. One of the good things about this Sutton team is that goals can come from many sources, as the day was about to prove. One of those sources, Stef Fox, proved the point when his well struck finish gave the home side the lead late in the half after some good all round work. 1-0 the score remained at half time and Sutton had their usual consolidatory chat. As has often been the case this season, it worked. Within a few minutes Tyler Hagan, continued his current run of form to add a second to give Sutton a little distance on the scoreboard. Sutton worked hard, with Josh Smith linking well with the likes of Ed White, Stef Fox, Frazer Watt and Will White. Alex Canham worked hard up front and Si Clarke and Ben White ensured there was little attacking threat from ‘Saints. Canham scored the third, picking up the scraps from an Ed White shot and Ed White scored the fifth picking up the scraps from an Alex Canham shot – however this many times played fraternal rivalry was eclipsed by the fourth goal scored by the rampaging Tom Baguley who following good play from Hagan and Smith finished into an open net and dedicated his celebration to his watching, slightly awkward fan club; two goals a season is enough for any sane man to endure. And so it finished 5-0, Sisson got his clean sheet; in no small thanks to Man of The Match Adam Taylor who once again put in a fine performance for the team – The Prince of Daffodils he maybe, but this season his favourite variety is clearly Indian Summer. Overall a good all round performance from the team with everyone contributing to a good win and making that further step towards the end of the season.
