After the heroics of last weekend playing with 9 players another heroic performance was needed, with Sutton taking on top of the league Haverhill.
Sutton welcomed back Lexi Clarke for her first game of the season following a lengthy injury.
it was obvious from the get go that Haverhill were a well drilled side and it didn’t take them long to take the lead with a rocket of a shot giving Sophie Clarke in goal no chance.
Sutton battled hard with the defence of Julie Warby Holly Fox Sarah Skate and Gemma Parr looking to feed the midfield 3 of Lillie Tegerdine Katie Whittaker and Penny Perowne. All 3 midfielders putting in a super shift to chase back hard when the ball was lost and trying to work the ball forwards when they could. Sutton did get some forays into the D, but despite the best efforts of Alice Blundy-Gent, Jasmin Garborit-Carter and Alison Whittaker were not able to work the opposition goalkeeper
A further rocket from Haverhill saw the half end with Sutton 2-0 down
The second half started with Sutton conceding a further 3 goals, all of which gave Keeper Sophie Clarke no chance. Suttons manager Wallis on the sideline was worried that this could turn into a rout but she need not have worried. Sutton continued to show a fighting spirit and with Sophie Clarke making some super saves, the whole squad continued to give their all. They were managing to pass through Haverhill with some great tackling and passing from Katie Whittaker and super work from Lillie Tegerdine. Lily Clarke also was industrious in her running and tackling in what is her debut season. Alice Blundy-Gent and Jasmin Gaborit-Carter worked well together with Jasmin working the keeper on a number of occasions before finally getting rewarded for her efforts with a wonderful goal to reduce the deficit.
The game finished 5-1 against but Sutton can definitely hold their heads high. For such a young side against very tough opponents this was a super performance.
Player of the match votes was shared between 7 of the squad but once again the award went to Jasmin for an all round wonderful performance and a super goal.
Next week another trip to the City, away at Cambs South.
