Womens 2nd XI vs Haverhill 1s

Sutton set off on their long road trip to top of the league Haverhill knowing that this week would be a tough ask. With several players unable to play, Sutton still arrived positive and in good spirits. They welcomed Evah to the team for her debut match and, with no subs now due to illness, they prepared to battle. Play began with much of the action in Sutton’s half. Suttons strong defence of Wendy, Penny, and Evah fought hard to prevent that first goal but were unlucky to concede within the first 15 minutes. Heads did not drop, and the midfield of Lillie, Alison, Lily and Lexi continued to work hard to try to keep possession and prevent further goals. The well drilled attack of Haverhill skillfully gained several short corners and defence again worked hard to prevent further goals with Sophie in goal making some fantastic saves. The first half, despite best efforts, finished 5 – 0 to Haverhill. 

Following a rousing and motivating half time talk from Simon, Matt and on pitch captain Emma, Sutton returned to the pitch with renewed energy and ambition. On several occasions the ball made its way through to Holly in attack, and the midfield worked hard to support her as Kate had now moved back to assist defence. 

The second half continued with a further 6 goals from Haverhill but also with several potential goals saved by both Sophie and her defensive team. Kate in particular made a fantastic save. At no point during the game did Sutton give up or play anything less than their usual 100%. Our junior players on pitch looked at ease and confident in what was a very challenging game. Player of the match was a very decisive and well deserved Sophie in goal. Her positivity, communication and quick reactions prevented the score line being much worse.
