Womens 2nd XI vs Ely City 2s

Long Sutton ladies took to the pitch for the final time in the 2025/26 season, welcoming Ely ladies.

Sutton were fired up from the off with the defence of Julie Penny Sarah and Emma resolute and determined. Sophie Clarke in goal must have had 3 weatabix for breakfast saving her best performance of the season for the last game, repelling anything that Ely could throw at her and taking charge of her D as though she had been playing in goal for years.

The midfield of Katie Lily C And Lillie T covered every blade of astro linking defence to the forwards, all playing with a maturity beyond their years.

Forwards Jasmin Lexi T and Holly made sure that Ely were under pressure whenever they had possession and tracked back admirably whilst also taking the game to Ely.

The bench was superbly ran by Stef and Si ensuring that Alison, Evah and Lexi C were able to switch on to keep legs fresh seemlessly. It was a welcome return for Lexi C, showing that she had lost none of her grit, determination and calmness under pressure during her lengthy injury lat-off.

Ely found the going difficult against a Sutton side who have grown so much during the season and the half finished 0-0

With sweets and drinks on board Sutton set about the second half with the same pride and passion that they had shown in the first half, with Evah also having her best game so far.

Sutton continued to be resolute, however were really unfortunate to go 1-0 down following a bouncing short corner which eluded everyone. Ely continued to test the Sutton defence but Emma was up to the task and was in no mood to let the Ely forwards through and if they did Sophie in goal remained on fire. Despite their best efforts though Ely were able to double their lead. This only lead Sutton to double their efforts though and they scored a super goal when Alison played a super ball through to Jasmin who finished with aplomb past the stranded Ely Keeper. A goal that was richly deserved. It was somewhat harsh then that from the restart Ely immediately regained the two goal cushion, although it came from a very good move down their right and there was little that Sutton could have done to avoid it. In the dying minutes a superb intervention by Sarah stopped Ely stretching their lead further which would have seen a score line which would have not reflected on the fantastic game, given by the whole Sutton squad.

We go again next season.
