Sutton begun life in div 1 with a home tie against Wapping 2s. With their 1st team winning promotion to national league a tough test was expected not helped by Sutton losing key personnel at either end of the pitch. The first half got under way and Wapping moved straight onto the front foot with a high intensity and tempo. The back 5 of Cliff, Fox, Baguley, Taylor and Harrison held firm until mid way through the half. An unfortunate slip from Baguley allowed the awaiting forward to smash threw the home keepers legs. Scores remained at 1-0 until half time despite Sutton winning a couple of penalty corners. The second half got under way and after working out how Wapping were playing Sutton managed the Wapping attacks much better. With the scores still at 1-0 Sutton had a glorious opening to level things up. A superb aerial ball from Fyson allowed Shore through 1 on 1 with the keeper going to his reverse was unable to get the desired connection. Into the final stages of the game Sutton pushed forward but it was Wapping that extend their lead with 2 penalty corner goals, the 2nd coming just before the final whistle. A spirited performance from the home side in which plenty of positives can be taken against a strong Wapping team. Man of the Whatling after his change of role in a more central position and tireless running.
