SUTTON SMASH DOUBLE FIGURES TO RECORD 4 WINS ON THE BOUNCE!

The 1st team began 2024 with a rearranged home fixture against bottom of the table Cambs City 4s. Despite the league position, Sutton made sure to stay focused and not let complacency seep in. A strong 15 man squad had been assembled with the side welcoming Fox and Batten to the fray. The game started in usual fashion for the home side as they dominated possession. If there was a heat map for the first 10 minutes the oppositions defensive third would have certainly been cooking on gas! Sutton struck first through their opening PC of the game. Fyson rounded the runners and finished with aplomb. The second came goal came from a quick counter after one of the only City attacks into the home sides third. A quality ball played down the left flank from Watt was perfect for Baker to pounce on as he headed towards the keeper, rounded him to the left and finished nicely into an open goal. The same man would add two more in the first half, one from a backhand and the other from a deflection thanks to Fyson's assist. The side would head into the break 4-0 up. They'd controlled the half brilliantly round the back and through the middle with great energy and intensity. The likes or Harrison, Donaghy, Fyson, Gray, East and Batten really helping to command things through the centre of the pitch. Oldfield, Proctor, Fox, Ellis, Taylor, Sargeant and Watt were all pivotal in the wide areas hitting City on countless attacks.

The second half began much the same for the first 10 minutes but Sutton would soon lose hold of their clean sheet as City pulled one back. After Proctor's shouts of "0-0 fellas" the home side were now, in his books, losing! The middle section of the half wasn't the best hockey we had seen from the men in green but they came through it relatively unscathed… other than East's left Achilles! He was struck by an opposition player in the aftermath of the home side's fifth goal! More goals were to come for the home side as Sargeant added one of his own. A thunderbolt if a strike on his back foot into the top right corner! Certainly the best of the lot. Baker would shortly add his 5th followed by Gray bagging his first of the season! #onlyscoresbangers

City would then score a third to take the score to 8-3 but Sutton reacted well. Two more goals from Baker thanks to brilliant work from the likes of Sargeant and Batten meant the score line finished 10-3! A great result to keep a hold of second spot in the table and next week sees a massive game at the top end of the table, away to local rivals Bourne Deeping! See you there!Â
