SARGEANT SMASHES SUTTON TO VICTORY

Sutton returned back to HQ for their penultimate home game of the season, against a side they had previously lost to on the road earlier in the season. They were keen to put wrongs to right after the last matchup, as well as from last weeks loss. A squad of 13 assembled with Batten being a last minute addition, deciding his hamstring was not so weak after all!

The game began and things were slow to get going at first but the majority of the action was in the opposition half. There were several penalty corners won before Proctor swept home from close range after a Fyson rebound fell nicely to him. The second game from a smart attack down the right flank as work from Ellis and Sargeant found Baker who cut inside to fire home into the top corner. It was once again Sargeant involved in the third goal as the ball fell for him to unleash an unstoppable strike into the netting. Had the keeper been in the way, he'd have needed up in the back of the net too! There was then just enough time for a week worked goal from the travelling side before half time. It would take a smart team goal to beat the comfortable defence of Proctor, Donaghy, Fyson, Oldfield and Cliff between the sticks. HT 3-1

A change of formation at half time but I grit did not bring with it the rewards the side felt it would. Attacking chances went begging and time was ebbing away for more goals. The midfield continued to work hard, clever touches from Taylor, Ibrahim and Gray continued to prize open the COP defence. However, to no reward. Later in the half, COP would score a second making the final 10 look interesting. The formation returned to the original to keep the likes of angry man Harrison happy! Harrison was then revved up and created chances going forward from which Sutton won themselves a penalty corner. It was played out and the ball once again fell to Sargeant to finish perfectly once again on the forehand to gift Sutton the breathing room they so desired. FT 4-2

It wasn't the best performance but it was a well welcomed 3 points to give the boys a boost going into the last 3 games knowing that promotion is now in their control. A game at a time they shall take but can the boys complete, what at the start of the season, seemed the unthinkable? Up next, Ely away on the 9th.
