Long Sutton ladies travelled to top of the table Cambs South on the back of a good warm up game last week. The game couldn't have got off to a better start with Long Sutton winning a short corner almost straight from the push back. Although attacking short corners had not been discussed in the pre-match chat, this team know how it's done. After a good straight strike from Emma Grosvenor was saved by the keeper, Katie Whittaker was on hand to slot home. 1-0 Sutton. To say that the league leaders were shocked was an understatement and they attacked Sutton hard. Sutton were in no mood however to give their opponents an easy game. Sarah Skate in defence was having a fine game as was Julie Warby and captain Georgina Synnott with communication high. With a tweak in midfield this week with 4 across the middle Sutton were more solid. This team were not looking to defend their lead however and Katie Whittaker and Pippa Hastings worked hard in midfield with Lillie Tegerdine and Aimee Betts providing good outlets wide when in possession. Sutton did however have to be careful on the turnovers and on one occasion were unfortunate to see themselves outnumbered at the back and Cambs South had their equaliser despite great defending by Emma Grosvenor. With a squad of 12 Sutton were able to rotate as and when needed and Holly Murdock, Alison Whittaker and Chantil Sinclair all had super games up front chasing down and putting Cambs under pressure. Holly Murdock found herself in a number of positions and played them all with drive and commitment The half finished all square. After a buoyant half time chat with sweets and drink taken on board Sutton took to the second half. Young Ellie Sandal in goal was having a fine commanding game and cleared a number of balls from the D to prevent the league leaders having any joy. Sutton continued to press and won another short corner. This time the super straight strike from Emma Grosvenor found the bottom left hand corner of the goal. 2-1 Sutton. Cambs South pressed hard but outstanding defending from all 10 outfield players and an absolutely amazing save from Ellie near the death saw Sutton take a very deserved 3 points. Player of the match could have gone to anyone. The forwards for non stop pressure, the midfield for non stop running and super control or the defence for resolute defending but the accolade was taken by Ellie Sandal for a super confident and outstanding performance in goal. Next week sees local rivals Wisbech travel to The Peele Leisure with them having become the new league leaders.
