Ely Leisure Park was the destination for the travelling Sutton 2nds this week, a unique venue in this league – where else can you get a KFC, a Macdonalds, A Nandos, watch a Bond Movie, have a meal at Arbuckles, catch a game of Rugby and play a quality game of hockey in one place! Sutton welcomed Tyler Hagan to the squad fresh from his night shift and were looking to consolidate their top spot earned last week. The away side started well with some good team play originating from the robust defence of Taylor, Baguley, Hales, Smith and Clarke. Fox and Watt worked hard in midfield as usual, ably assisted by the White brothers Ed and Will who added that little bit of craft to the build up play. Hagan's pace was a good addition to the team and his willingness to make runs gave Canham someone to work with as they attempted to break down the well drilled Ely defence. Sutton dominated the first half and made the breakthrough after around 15 minutes when Ed White fed in a short corner to Fox who finished clinically, this lead was doubled when Will White scored following good work from Hagan. The score at half time was 3-0, after a well worked team goal which started with Baguley and finished with Canham playing in Watt to finish. A good half, with contributions from all the squad. Sutton looked to tweak it at half time in order to stretch their lead and this they did with Hagan assisting for White to make it 4-0. Ely to their credit did not give up and it was a mix of their well organised battling and Sutton's profligate finishing that meant the away team did not score any more goals; indeed Ely deserved the late consolation goal, even if it was harsh on Sisson who had put in a performance that deserved a clean sheet. A 4-1 away win in front of a travelling army of away supporters, bolstered by early pushbacks for the Mens 1's and Ladies 2's – excellent efforts from the team, especially those feeling under the weather and from the Green Army Fan Club whose ‘Dawsmere' Wave lifted the temperature on a cold afternoon in the Isle! Back home next week in the hotly anticipated ‘Tydd Gote' Derby versus Wisbech!
