SUTTON SHARE SPOILS IN SCINTILLATING SOUTH SHOWDOWN

Sutton entered the game with the knowledge that 3 points in this fixture, whilst hard, would mean their ride into the end of the season would be more comfortable. Standing in their way however were a Cambridge South side 15 deep and with plenty of experience all the way through the side. Faced with a tough task in front of them, Sutton steeled themselves and got ready to play.

From the off, the midfield duo of Stef Fox and Edmund White dominated the entire middle of the park, which allowed the rest of the midfield of Troy Croxford, Luke Jackson and Dan Plant to express themselves up top. This was ably assisted by the dynamic runs of Eddie Hales, Sam Bartlett and Alex Canham who made life miserable for the defending Cambridge players. Chances came and went with no trouble to the scoreline, until a thunderbolt from Plant deflected off a defender to fly into the top corner to open the scoring. Some may have thought that the flood gates would open at that point, but resolute keeping prevented that from happening and the half ended far too soon for Sutton.

Once the second half begun, it became the defenders turn to become the stars of the Sutton Show. Alfie Braginton in goal made some confident saves, and the well set trio of Ben Hales, Si Clarke and MOTM Tom Baguley repelled any attempts goalwards. Special mention has to go to both Jackson and Bartlett who made some important back post blocks.

However, with not too long to go a short corner was won by Cambs South, and Braginton could do nothing about the placement of the shot which slipped in off the side netting. Both side kept coming forward, but Baguley stopped any and all attacks towards the Sutton goal. The full time whistle this time could not come soon enough for Sutton, and once it went it was felt that a fair result was had by all. This makes for a very interesting end to the season, where the top 3 teams are separated by one point only with 3 weeks to go - great for the neutral but nail biting for those involved!!!
